How Phytonutrients Benefit Us

Hippocrates Health Institute Organic foodsFor over fifty years Hippocrates Health Institute has been studying food, in particular raw foods and their effects to promote wellness. All foods have nutrients in some degree or another, but there are certain nutrients that are more abundant in certain foods that have a dramatic positive impact on health. Relative recently scientists have discovered natural compounds called Phytonutrients that are found in foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes that work with other essential nutrients to promote good health.

Phytonutrients act as powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories preventing among other things, aging. Their anti-aging abilities come about by their ability to neutralize free radicles in the body – and free radicals are what cause cellular damage that leads to wrinkles, and dry sagging skin i.e. aging. As a note of interest, free radicles come from alcohol, air pollution, radiation, stress, coffee and cooked foods to name just a few. So as you can see its not so easy to totally avoid free radicles, which makes the presence of phytonutrients all that more important. Inflammation and swelling occurs from infection or injury, when the body’s immune system responds by sending more blood to the affected area with components needed for recovery. At the Hippocrates Health Institute we have witnessed numerous occasions where introducing a diet high in phytonutrients to somebody having inflammation, result in a dramatic reduction of the swelling and degree of inflammation.

More than 25,000 different phytonutrient compounds have already been identified by scientists! Phytonutrients often give vegetables their distinctive colors such as green in spinach, orange in carrots and red in bell peppers. The following list is just a few of the most typical phytonutrients, and the plants they can be found in, together with associated health benefits:

Hippocrates Health Institute has known about the health benefiting properties of plant foods since it’s founding in the 1960’s, and has always encouraged organic on top of this. We now know that organic fruits and vegetables contain much more phytonutrients than non-organic plants. When plants are sprayed with artificial, chemically synthesized pesticides and fungicides they become dependent on this artificial ‘protection’, and consequently stop producing the natural phytonutrient antibodies normally used to deal with these challenges.

One of the reason why Hippocrates health Institute promotes a raw, living food diet is because cooking vegetables over 115 degrees F destroys the sensitive phytonutrients. Therefore the Hippocrates diet consists of organic fresh, ripe and living whole fruits, vegetables and sprouts, full of active phytonutrients and immune system enhancing properties.
