Sprouts – Powerhouses of Nutrition

Sprout-1Sprouts account for 50% of the raw living food diet served at Hippocrates Health Institute because of their high levels of nutrients and enzymes and the ease at which they can be digested. This allows the body to direct the excess energy toward other beneficial functions like cleansing, regulating and building the immune system, and healthy cell creation. Even compared to eating other raw foods, you will experience a greater sense of vitality and energy after a meal of sprouts. Hippocrates takes the extra step to incorporate sprouts such as wheatgrass and sunflower into the drinks served each day thereby maximizing the health benefits gained from both food and drink.

The importance of nutrition in bringing vitality to the body is not a new concept practiced at Hippocrates Health Institute. Going back 5000 years records exist of Chinese physicians prescribing sprouts to treat illnesses.

sproutsSo why are sprouts so nutritionally beneficial? The answer lies within the seed which is full of nutrition and enzymes. When a seed gets water, air and suitable temperature it germinates and it’s enzymes become activated, and there is an explosion of nutritional activity – on average vitamin A will increase 300 percent and a 500 to 600 percent increase in vitamin C. In addition the starches are converted into simple sugars, thus making sprouts easy to digest. After sprouting the enzymes become the ‘lifeforce’ that facilitate the digestion and absorption of nutrients in the body.

Attributes of a sprout:

  • 100 times greater enzyme activity than fruits and vegetables within the first 7 days after germination.
  • Easier to digest carbohydrates, as its starches are converted to simple sugars.
  • Contains easily digestible fatty acid soluble compounds, in place of fats.
  • The complex proteins of the seed are converted to easily digestible simple amino acids.
  • Vitamin production increases 300% to 1200%.
  • Minerals become bonded to amino acids making them easily assimilated into the body.
  • Its cell walls are more delicate allowing nourishment to be released more easily.
  • High in phytochemicals and antioxidants powerful in fighting disease and provides anti aging properties.
  • Abundant in Chlorophyll – having purification, anti-inflammation and regeneration qualities.

At Hippocrates Health Institute the statement that’s often heard, “It’s not the food in your life – it’s the life in your food”, refers to these sprout powerhouses. Never in a plants life will the nutrition and enzyme levels be as high as during the sprouting phase.

IMG_1423There is a wide variety of sprouts to choose from offering different flavors and textures, as well as nutritional and health benefits. Some of the salient benefits are as follows:

Sunflower – up to 30% protein, contains 8 essential amino acids, and vitamin D (Approx. 92 IU per 100g or 16% RDA). Also high in trace minerals making it good for bones, muscles, tissue tone and red blood cells.

Sweet Pea – Rich in protease inhibitors that act against viruses and chemicals that promote cancer. Reduces bad cholesterol or LDL in the blood.

Buckwheat – good for circulation, digestion, and neutralizing the effects of radiation due to its anti-plaque properties.

Clover – Purifies the blood. High in calcium and contains plant estrogens that balance hormones. Contains anti-cancerous isoflavones.

Broccoli – High in sulfophane known to protect cells becoming malignant, containing up to 100 times more than in the mature plant. Promotes the bodies’ production of glutathione that neutralize carcinogens, before they can damage the cell DNA.

Radish – Good for clearing mucous from the respiratory tract. De-worms the body and builds good intestinal flora. Mung, Lentil and Adzuki – High in soluble fibers that lowers the bad LDL cholesterol in the blood. Help in regulating insulin and blood sugars.

Fenugreek – Reduces inflammation and benefits the digestive system by soothing the mucous membranes. Contains a fat controller chorine, thus helping weight loss.

Sprouts offer a very viable and economic solution for many regions facing food shortages. They require virtually no soil, very little space and water relative to the nutritional content they provide. When we see the burden to the planet caused by modern diets of meat, dairy, fish, and large monoculture farming practices, growing sprouts could potentially provide an economical and environmentally sustainable alternative. The health benefits form a high sprout diet witnessed by Hippocrates Health Institute should not go without mention. A world where people ate mostly sprouts would be a healthy and thriving one!

Man-Made Osteoporosis

Osteoperosis leading to Fracture

Osteoporosis leading to Fracture

Osteoporosis is a disease that is not only treatable without the need for drugs, but it is also preventable! In the United States more women are killed by osteoporosis every year than the combined deaths from cancer of the breast, cervix and uterus. In the USA today twenty-five million people have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, and it is estimated that as high as nine out of ten people in America are at risk of developing osteoporosis having sub-optimal bone density. At Hippocrates Health Institute we frequently encounter guests suffering from this debilitating and unnecessary disease and have witnessed remarkable changes in those adopting our wellness enhancing lifestyle.

Osteoporosis develops when bones lose mass, weaken and become prone to fracture. Under a microscope such bones appear ‘porous’ hence the name Osteoporosis. This disease often goes un-diagnosed until one suffers a fracture. In the US there are over 1.5 million such fractures each year from osteoporosis, with hip fractures accounting for almost 20%. A quarter of all hip fracture patients end up in a nursing care home unable to walk, and another quarter will die within three months from health conditions related to the fracture.

Osteoporosis occurs when bone mass loss is accelerated and our bodies are not growing enough new bone to maintain healthy bone mass. Our bones are living tissues and each year we replace about 20% with new tissue mass. As we grow older we lose bone mass, but if we have built strong bones in our youth, this won’t matter. Accelerated bone mass loss occurs when our diet is over acidic causing calcium leeching to occur. The most acidic foods happen to be the foods of the standard American diet, namely meat, dairy and caffeine. But refined sugars, salt and phosphorous can also play a significant role, as we shall see.

Animal Protein

Animal protein is highly acidic and most Americans obtain about 70% from animal sources. On top of that we consume on average 100g of protein a day, that’s two to four times what’s necessary for health. Animal protein metabolizes to form strong acids in the body, and the body reacts by leeching calcium from our bones in an attempt to neutralize and balance acidity. Unfortunately consuming more calcium does not solve this problem. Studies conducted on Alaskan Inuits who have the highest rates of osteoporosis in the world, found that they consume more than twice the calcium than the average American, together with twice the amount of animal protein. The excess calcium consumption does not help, which leaves the problem pointing to excess animal protein. The Hippocrates Health Institute living food diet provides alkaline proteins in amounts perfectly suited for optimum health.

Americans consume more than 96% of all the world’s dairy production from a population representing only 4% of the world. If milk and cheese were good for us, why do we have almost the weakest bones in the world? Although cows milk contains more than four times that of human milk, its not bioavailable to the body and we cannot absorb it as much. This is due to the fact that milk is low in magnesium necessary for calcium absorption. Cows milk is also high in acidic protein that the body counteracts by leeching calcium from our bones. We end up with a net loss of calcium! And we are told to feed milk to our children so they will have healthy bones when they grow older??

Refined Sugars

Refined Sugar

Refined Sugar

Sugar is added to almost all processed food from ketchup to sodas, and the average American person intakes about 150 pounds of refined sugar a year! But how does this contribute to bone damage? Well, excessive refined sugars actually create acidic blood conditions similar to meat and dairy! This occurs because refined sugars are absorbed quickly into cellular glucose, but is lacking in oxygen resulting in partial oxidation that form acids! And as we learned already acids cause calcium loss from our bones. To make matters worse sugar causes magnesium loss, which is necessary for bone formation. The Hippocrates Health Institute diet cuts out all refined sugars producing a healthy environment to counteract many modern lifestyle diseases including osteoporosis.

It’s easily possible to lose up to 20% bone mass in 10 years from just 5000mg of daily salt consumption! Many Americans consume from 8,000 to 10,000mg of sodium a day compared to our ancestors 70mg per day! Every 5000mg of sodium causes 23mg loss of calcium in the urine, and this equates to 2.5% bone mass loss per year.

This mineral in excessive quantities inhibits calcium absorption by reacting with it to form an insoluble compound, and also metabolizes to form phosphoric acid, which the body deals with by taking calcium from the bones to neutralize acidity. Excessive phosphorous is contained in meat, and soda drinks that have added phosphoric acid.

Along with a healthy diet, exercise plays an essential role in bone growth and reversing bone loss. Control studies have showed bone mass increasing in people who exercise compared to bone mass loss in a control group not exercising.

The ideal lifestyle to treat and prevent osteoporosis combines exercise with non-acidic bioavailable forms of calcium found in green vegetables such as broccoli, chard, kale, and whole grains and beans to name a few. Also important is vitamin D, which is the main intestinal regulator for calcium absorption. Vitamin D is best sourced from skin contact with sunlight. Other important vitamins necessary to absorb calcium are magnesium, folic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin B6. All of these can be adequately sourced from a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, grains and beans.

Preventing and reversing osteoporosis – conclusion

Healthy green vegetablesFirstly prevent osteoporosis by reducing ‘calcium loss’, most effectively achieved by cutting meat and dairy from your diet, and drastically reduce sugar, salt, phosphorous and caffeine intake. Secondly increase your intake of calcium by consuming foods that contain bioavailable calcium that don’t create acidic conditions, along with nutrients that support bone mass growth, such as manganese, boron, vitamin D, vitamin C.

The plant-based diet encouraged at Hippocrates Health Institute together with adequate exercise that forms the basis of the Hippocrates’s Life Transformation program is the best way to accomplish both prevention and reversal of osteoporosis. This disease therefore need not exist, as indeed is the case in countries and societies where traditionally meat and dairy are seldom consumed.

Into the Deep – Alkalinity, Acidity and Water

Healthful Hints Water

Every single cell of our body runs on water. Cells are the bricks and mortar of our chemical makeup. Our respiratory and circulatory systems require water to function. The simple fact is without adequate hydration we would be dead. Could it be that the manifestation of disease symptoms is really your body’s cry for water? Of course, other aspects of health care also have to be considered if we are going to achieve optimal health?

The Water Solution
According to the World Health Organization for each pound of body weight you should drink half an ounce of water daily. Example: 180 lb = 90 oz. of water daily. Divide that into 8 or 10 oz. glasses and that’s how many glasses you will need to drink daily. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks; these act as diuretics and will dehydrate you. Every 6 oz. of caffeine or alcohol requires an additional 10 to 12 oz. of water to re-hydrate your body.

Monitor your pH, checking both urine and saliva with test strips after fully detoxing. The ideal internal fluid pH is 7.365. The lower the reading, the more acid your body is and the more difficult it is for it to repair itself because it is then in a degenerative state. You will find that in most cases, people with cancer and other terrible health challenges are very acidic. But, of course, there are foods you need to select for proper pH. That’s why the thrust at Hippocrates Health Institute is organic 100% raw food, which is perfect for alkalizing the body. You will be amazed at how acid soda, coffee, tea and beer are when you check them with litmus paper. Likewise check the worst and best foods with litmus paper so you understand how important it is to eat properly.

What is the best water to drink?
According to over 60 years of research that has been carried out by the Japanese it is ionized water.  They have shown that drinking water with a pH of 9.1 to 9.3 is the best therapy you can give your body. This pH means that the water is alkaline and can be used by our bodies to relieve some of the stress created by an acidic situation. The ionized water also has additional hydroxyl (OH-) molecules that function in the body as a liquid anti-oxidant. It has been proven in recent years that anti-oxidants are very beneficial for our health as they neutralize free radicals.

Wheatgrass & Living Foods

Healthful Hints Water

One of the most effective ways of ensuring you drink alkaline water is by using a water ionizer, as used at Hippocrates Health Institute in the Oasis Therapy Center. A water ionizer produces a high pH water to assist the body in balancing the pH of the fluids within the body. It is a natural way to detox on a daily basis. In fact a water ionizer produces two types of water at the same time – alkaline water, known as antioxidant water and acidic water, known as cleansing water. Yes, as mentioned above, the alkaline water becomes a very powerful antioxidant to fight the excess free radical cells causing many of the problems in degenerative disease. The antioxidant water produces more oxygen for the body to use effectively. Oxygenation cannot be emphasized enough; that’s why oxygen therapy plays a major role in the therapies at the Hippocrates Health Institute.

The second water produced by the machine, the cleansing water, is used to clean everything; the body, surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom plus floors. The cleansing water has become a powerful antibacterial and it’s great for burns and all types of wounds.  Research has shown that bacteria are destroyed on contact, even Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) and the most virulent strains of E. coli.

Tap water is initially filtered through the machine’s 1 micron fibrous carbon filter. The filter provides a defense against the barrage of toxins added to our water by industry and our population, which ends up in our water supply. Many choose to add the Ionizer as the last stage, after their existing water cleaning system. Can you believe there can be up to 350 separate chemicals and adverse substances found in tap water?

Conditions the antioxidant alkaline water can assist:
• Over-acidity within the body (acidosis)
• High blood pressure and poor blood circulation
• Digestion problems such as IBS
• Recurring indigestion
• Osteoporosis
• Arthritis and achy joints
• Migraines, headaches and nausea
• Indigestion
• Diarrhea and constipation
• Recurring cystitis
• Allergies including hay fever
• Treat fungal disease on the body such as athlete’s foot

Potential treatments for the cleansing acidic water:
• Blotchy, rough, cracked and dry skin
• Acne
• Rashes
• Eczema
• Psoriasis
• Burns
• Wounds including open wounds
• Mouth sores and ulcers
• Blisters
• Insect bites
• Alternative to soaps and wash creams – It’s a natural astringent so use it to cleanse the skin instead of or in combination with  your favorite soaps (especially on the face).

Naturally Healthful Hints: A Household and Hygiene Hero

At Hippocrates we teach you to avoid toxins in cleaning and personal-care products. This leads many to wonder what they can use for household and hygiene tasks. Natural substitutes do not always have to be expensive. Simple substances like hydrogen peroxide (H2o2) have a multitude of uses. The team at Hippocrates Health Institute did a little internet research and discovered many reasons for keeping hydrogen peroxide at hand, including some we had not thought of Consider these:

Take one cupful (the little cap that comes on the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, avoiding swallowing, then spit it out. This will help to keep you free of germs and canker sores. Your teeth will be whiter without expensive and toxic whitening products. Use it instead of mouthwash.

Healthful Hints Smile

Soak toothbrushes in peroxide to keep them free of germs.

Clean kitchen counters, table tops and bathrooms with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply mix it 50/50 with pure water and spray it on surfaces.
Some have used a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water in a spray bottle to treat feet with fungus. Just spray it on every night and let it dry.

Use peroxide for first aid. Soak any infections or cuts in 3 percent peroxide for five to 10 minutes several times a day.

If you have a toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a cupful of 3 percent peroxide into your mouth and hold it for 10 minutes several times a day until you see your dentist. The pain will lessen greatly.

Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help get rid of boils, fungus or other skin infections.

Healthful Hints Laundry

You can add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Use peroxide to clean mirrors without streaking.

Use as a vegetable wash or soak to kill bacteria and neutralize chemicals. Rinse them well afterward.

Disinfect your dishwasher (½ cup per load) or refrigerator (spray and wipe).

Healthful Hints Plants

Use it on trees and plants as a natural fungicide, insecticide, and as a weed killer.

To make a good hand wash, use 1 ounce per 1 pint (2 cups) of 35 percent H2o2 (available at health stores). You also may add hand soap to this solution and put it in a pump bottle. Now you not only are washing your hands, you also are using a powerful antiseptic.

Plants like H2o2, and it benefits them in two ways. First, it oxygenates the soil. Second, it kills microorganisms, fungus and bacteria harmful to plants. It will not harm worms. House plants and gardens thrive with H2o2 supplementation, and increasing numbers of commercial farmers have added H2o2 to their crop inventories for this reason. Dilution ration: Use ½ ounce of 35 percent food-grade peroxide (from a health store) per 1 gallon of water for plant watering and to soak seeds for sprouting.

DO NOT use drugstore 2-3 percent hydrogen peroxide (h2o2) for any purposes related to food or any potential internal consumption. Choose the food grade type from the health food store. Hippocrates does not recommend hydrogen peroxide for internal use since there may be counter-indications when it is taken internally.
